World Literature (Traditional & Honors):
World Literature focuses on broadening high school students’ literary landscape. The course begins with an investigation of culture, working towards a definition and an understanding of commonalities and differences among human cultures as represented in literature, media, and nonfiction from around the world. Students read widely and deeply and are asked to write about and research ways cultures communicate and conflicts that sometimes arise between cultures.
IB Diploma Programme HL 1 (Application & Interview Required)
The IB DP HL1 program is primarily a pre-university course in literature. Literature is concerned with our conceptions, interpretations and experiences of the world. It enables an exploration of one of the more enduring fields of human creativity and artistic ingenuity, and provides immense opportunities for encouraging independent, original, critical and clear thinking. The discussion of literature is itself an art which requires the clear expression of ideas both orally and in writing.
In view of the international nature of the IBO, the Language A1 program does not limit the study of literature to the achievements of one culture or the cultures covered by any one language. The study of World Literature is important to IB students because of its global perspective. It offers for the appreciation of the various ways in which cultures influence and shape the experiences of life common to all humanity. Our diverse curriculum encourages international mindedness. Education for intercultural understanding requires students to develop knowledge of different cultural perspectives but also, and critically, it requires reflection on why different perspectives exist.
